Creating a web 2.0 Assignment

20 09 2007

In this lesson I will be working with web 2.0 to create a project for students to complete. The assignement will include the participation of parents and students, where we assume that the parents are free willing and have low knowledge in the area of web 2.0. The student is now the tecacher and will revel in their new important roles.

My project will be in the field of history HISTORY!!!!     1950s and 60s Housewife

Here it is:

The 1950s Housewife

Prior information: In the weeks leading up to the assignment I will send a letter out to parents informing them of the upcomming assignments. They will be notified that their participation is essential for the assignment to be a success. I will also highlight what benefits this assignment could have on them and their children. They will learn new ICT skills where now the word youtube wont send a shiver up their spine.  I will make an effort to give them sufficient notice as I understand that parents today are extremely busy. I will also assure them that parents living out of the country can also be included as it is all online. Here goes………………

Introduction: All students will be broken up into groups of three. The students are asked to work side by side with their parents/parent and contribute to a group wiki. Before the sense of worry sets in here is some information to put you at ease about what wikis are and how they can be useful to learning.

Common questions

How will this help my students?

”When students write a paper, they’re usually writing for one person: their teacher. When students know their peers and parents will read what they write, students care and they try harder.”

When you use a wiki, your students get a gentle introduction into online collaboration, and they’ll remain engaged beyond the classroom. Many of our educators tell us about their students getting hooked on PBwiki and editing it from home and on the weekends!

Why use a wiki instead of a blog or forum?

Blogs are great for one-to-many communication, such as one person writing about personal finance. Forums are good for letting many users ask questions and letting many people answer. Wikis are excellent for collaboration. Iwant to let students collaborate, add files, suggest links, and create a document that’s comprehensive and up-to-date.

The Group: Here are the groups

1) Lawlers, Smiths, Comans

2) Volpatos, Martins, Cooks

3) Jos, Flomers, Gins

4) Mcalister, Rakes, Brakens

5) Jones, Bruce, pinkton

The Task

1)  Each group is to create their own Wiki page. Within this site each family has their own page when they are asked to answer questions and implement Web 2.0 tools. On the Home page is the task that needs to be undertaken.

2) Also on the home page (group page) must be an entry from each individual involved answering the following questions:

Q1)  What are your initial thoughts and trepidations towards the assignment?

Q2) Parent: How do you feel your son or daughter will cope with teaching you about Web 2.0?

Student: How do you think the extra responsibility on you will help you to learn?

Q3) Are you excited about the prospect of learning with your son or daughter Mum or Dad?

Then after this reflection is done each family can then move into following the questions. Now each family is to create their own page where they are to undertake the following tasks:

1) a) The student must interview their parent on 5 questions regarding their schooling and upbringing. In this task we are trying to compare the education of students in todays education system to those in the 50′s 60′s and 70′s. An example of a question may be. What subjects were available to you at school? or What year did you leave school?  (here the questions and answers must be posted on the family’s page).

b) I would now like the parents to construct five questions to ask their child along the lines of the use of ICT (computers). E.g what is myspace?

2) After this each family is asked to download a youtube clip to their page. This clip should be about life for a 1950′s housewife. Here I want the student to demonstrate how this is done. If having trouble message someone else in your group. (below is an example)

3)

a) Each parent is then asked to compare their upbringing with someone who grew up in the 1950s, simmilartities, differences etc. Approximately 6 to 8 lines.

b) The student is asked to do the same, but compare their schooling to that of someone who was in their teens and early twentyies in the 1950′s.

4. We will now look closely at the 1950s housewife. I want each family to post a song that reresents womens struggle in the 1950s and 60s. Comment must be made by each member to how this song is relevent. (think ‘I am women’ Helen Reddy) heres an example:

(Helen Reddy and Ray Burton)
I am woman, hear me roar
In numbers too big to ignore
And I know too much to go back an’ pretend
‘Cause I’ve heard it all before
And I’ve been down there on the floor
No one’s ever gonna keep me down again

Oh yes, I am wise
But it’s wisdom born of pain
Yes, I’ve paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to
I can do anything
I am strong (strong)
I am invincible (invincible)
I am woman

You can bend but never break me
‘Cause it only serves to make me
More determined to achieve my final goal
And I come back even stronger
Not a novice any longer
‘Cause you’ve deepened the conviction in my soul

Oh, yes, I am wise
But it’s wisdom born of pain
Yes, I’ve paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to
I can face anything
I am strong (strong)
I am invincible (invincible)
I am woman

I am woman watch me grow
See me standing toe to toe
As I spread my lovin’ arms across the land
But I’m still an embryo
With a long, long way to go
Until I make my brother understand

Oh, yes, I am wise
But it’s wisdom born of pain
Yes, I’ve paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to
I can face anything
I am strong (strong)
I am invincible (invincible)
I am woman

Oh, I am woman
I am invincible
I am strong

I am woman
I am invincible
I am strong
I am woman

The family page will now be looking like a wonderful collaboration of what life was like for people in the 1950s.

5) As a group I would like all families to answer together the question, In what aspects of your family life are similar to that of the 1950s? and in what ways are they differnt? take into account gender roles, work hours, occupation, free time? (10lines)

Closing note: The above tasks will work towards making the students more knowledgable in the roles of womens in the 1950s and will help parents become more comfortable with the use of ICT. These tasks I have chosen will also hopefully assist in appealing to students multiple intelligences!
